This weekend, Pocket attended the Pennsylvania World Horse Expo to represent mustangs on Breed Row. She was the only mustang there for that purpose which meant she was in the ring by herself and she was the only one displayed to the public so she did not get much of a break during the day. She was inside the building from Wednesday night until Sunday evening when we left to go home.

The issue surrounding wild horses and burros is complicated and layered. A lot of people don’t even know where to start when it comes to learning about these incredible animals. The Devil’s Garden Wild Horse Territory is 500-square miles of rolling and rough country within the Modoc National Forest just outside of Alturas, California. The area consists of sharp rocks and dense brush — in fact, if the Devil were to grow his own garden, this would be it. It’s a rough, beautiful country managed by the United States Forest Service.

Any day now, the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) will announce its decision on how it will proceed with the controversial surgical sterilization (spay) experiments it plans to perform on captive wild mares at the Hines corrals in Burns, Oregon. Before that announcement is made, we would like to make it very clear why we do not support this procedure.

Every day the staff at Montgomery Creek Ranch (MCR) receives requests to take in mustangs that people no longer want or can care for. Unfortunately, our sanctuary is operating at full capacity and so by and large these requests must be turned down. It’s heartbreaking that we can't save them all.

When I first got involved in the wild horse issue and heard about the way the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) provides hoof care to the over 50,000 wild horses and burros at its holding facilities I was horrified. That's because the BLM trims the horses hooves in a chute that turns them onto their sides.

Last week marked six years of Montgomery Creek Ranch taking in the beloved Deer Run herd - a small band of wild horses that lived outside Carson City, Nevada.
